Day 2: Omelettes and eggs

“Right, as the world goes, is only in question between equals in power, while the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must”
- Thucydides

Piracy is a dirty business. Most pirates will tell you that they are honourable, but at the end of the day engaging in PvP with another party who is not equipped for or wanting the fight is always going to be controversial. Like the day I dropped a bunch of combat probes onto a fleet of miners in an anomaly. Never mind that my Imicus was not going to be able to scratch any one of them, let alone survive the combined might of their drones. Those guys were livid with me for even hinting that I might be a threat, and spared no language in telling me so.

For my part the reasoning is pretty straightforward. Like it or not, Eve is inherently PvP. I do not believe in making other people's lives miserable, but equally it is a game and not reality. If a loss makes you want to swear at or worse threaten anyone, then you are taking it way too seriously. I've lost my fair share of ships, and the only person who got sworn at was myself (even that was an affectionate kind of "eeh, ye daft beggar" kind of vibe). I want to learn to PvP, and you can't make a omelette without cracking a few ships open. But everyone has to be able to live with their own behaviour.

So for now, and for what is worth, my code of conduct is this:

  • I will treat everyone with respect
  • My word is my bond
  • If I inflict material loss on a new player (~three months or younger), I will reimburse (where possible) the value of that loss
  • I will always be polite
  • I enage in combat on my own terms

Yes, the initial plan will involve fighting people who are unprepared to fight back, but as my skills improve (assuming that they do) the plan will evolve. For now the focus is still firmly on that first kill mark.
